Two s chool boys aged 10 and 13 drowned while swimming in a quarry in Kathaana, Kangundo sub county of Machakos county on the evening of Thursday, 25th August.
The incident was confirmed by Kangundo sub county Police Commander Zacharia Bitok who disclosed that the two boys were swimming when tragedy struck.
“There are two kids who have drowned at Kathaana, in the quarries, I think they were trying to swim. They are aged 10 and 13 years,” said Bitok on phone.
The police boss warned parents against allowing their children to go swimming in the quarries which after heavy rains become filled with water thus becoming a health hazard.
Mr Bitok added that he will launch awareness campaigns and sensitize the community living in the areas about the quarries and the risks therein.
“We will talk to them on the issue and sensitize them on the safety of their kids. They should know about their children’s whereabouts and warn them against going to these quarries which have become death traps,” he said.
The body of the two children were moved to Kangundo level four hospital for preservation awaiting post mortem as investigations into the incident have also began.
