Education News is a publication of Shrends Publishers. This notice explains how we handle personal information when you use educationnews.co.ke, purchase access to our journalism, contact us or connect an administrator’s Google AdSense account.
Privacy contact: news@educationnews.co.ke
Information we collect
When you register, sign in, buy content or contact us, we may collect your name, phone number, email address, account details, messages and information you choose to submit. Purchases also create records of the item or package, amount, payment status and transaction reference. Where an account has a password, it is stored as a password hash.
Our systems record technical and usage information, such as requested pages, referrer, device or browser information, session identifiers, reading activity and server or security logs. Server logs can include IP addresses. Comments or other contributions you submit may be displayed publicly after moderation. Please avoid putting private contact details or sensitive information in public comments.
How we use information
We use information to provide news and reader services, manage accounts, confirm payments, unlock purchased stories or newspapers, maintain subscriptions, respond to support requests and send account or payment messages. We also use usage information to measure readership, improve performance, understand demand and protect the service against abuse.
Newsletter subscriptions and browser alerts are optional. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter using its unsubscribe link and turn off browser notifications in your browser settings. Essential account, security and purchase messages may still be needed to provide the service you requested.
M-Pesa payments
When you request an M-Pesa prompt, we send the payment phone number, amount and transaction details to the payment service to process the purchase. We receive the payment outcome and, when supplied by the payment service, confirmation details such as the transaction reference. Payment information is used to reconcile the purchase and provide access to the content.
Enter your M-Pesa PIN only in the prompt on your phone. Education News does not ask you to enter an M-Pesa PIN on this website. Do not send your PIN or account password to the newsroom.
Cookies, browser storage and advertising
We use cookies or similar browser storage for functions such as keeping you signed in, maintaining purchase progress, remembering preferences and recording site visits. Clearing browser storage may sign you out or remove saved purchase progress.
We use Google AdSense advertising code. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies, device identifiers and information about visits to this and other websites to deliver, personalise and measure advertisements, depending on their settings and your choices. Advertising providers may process this information directly. You can manage browser cookies and Google’s advertising personalisation choices using the links below. Blocking some storage or third-party services can affect website features.
Google AdSense administrator connection
An authorised administrator can choose to connect a Google AdSense account. With that administrator’s permission, the integration reads AdSense account identifiers and account, ad-client and website approval information to display the connection status in our admin dashboard. The integration stores an encrypted authorisation token so the status can be refreshed without signing in each time.
Information received through this Google connection is used to provide and support the AdSense dashboard integration. We follow Google’s API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements, when using or transferring information received through Google APIs. Administrators can remove the stored connection in the AdSense settings or revoke permission in their Google Account.
Service providers and external content
Hosting, technical support, payment, email delivery and advertising services process information needed to provide their respective functions. We may also disclose information where required by law or where necessary to protect the service and investigate misuse. Access within our organisation is limited to staff and service providers who need it for their work.
Embedded videos, social media, advertisements and links to other websites can connect your browser directly to external providers. Those providers handle information under their own privacy notices. Our suppliers’ infrastructure may involve processing outside Kenya; contact us if you need information about a particular service or transfer.
Retention and protection
We keep information for as long as needed for the purpose for which it was collected, including providing access to purchases, supporting accounts, keeping necessary transaction records and dealing with security incidents or disputes. Different records may need different retention periods. Deletion requests may be subject to records we must retain for these purposes or applicable obligations.
We use technical and organisational measures to protect information, including encrypted website connections and restricted administrative access. No online service can guarantee complete security. Use a strong password where one is set and keep your email account and phone secure.
Your choices, requests and concerns
You can ask about personal information we hold, request access or correction, request deletion or raise an objection or other privacy concern by contacting news@educationnews.co.ke. We may need to verify your identity before discussing an account or changing its information. We will consider requests in line with applicable requirements and explain relevant limitations, such as retained transaction records.
Parents, guardians and readers can use the same contact for concerns about a child’s personal information. For a reporting correction or an issue involving information in a published story, include the story URL and the details of your concern. You may also raise a data-protection concern with Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice as our services or information practices change. The date at the top identifies the current version. Contact the newsroom if you have questions about an update.
