Scholar asks governor to establish fund to support bright children

By Erick Nyayiera

A scholar has asked Siaya Governor, James Orengo, to consider establishing a scholarship fund to support the education of bright but needy students across the region.

Mr. Thomas Andiwo Obondoh, an education consultant with UNICEF, says that apart from the county government bursaries which are usually shared amongst several beneficiaries, a kitty can be established to provide full scholarships to needy students.

He stated that the kitty will enable the county to send its bright children to the schools where they have been called for example to the national and extra county schools.

Mr. Obondoh regretted that quite often, the majority of bright children in Siaya County have failed to join the coveted schools where they are called due to lack of school fees.

The educationist has at the same time challenged the NG-CDF committee in Bondo Constituency to equally think of a scholarship program to support such children the way it is usually done in other constituencies such as Ugunja, Alego/Usonga and Ugenya among others.

Mr. Andiwo Obondoh who is also the chairman of Andiwo Obondoh Foundation made the remarks when they were releasing bursaries worth Kshs. 250,000 to benefit 50 bright and needy students in Bondo constituency.

He revealed that they shall be supporting 50 students every term bringing the total to 150 students who will benefit under the Andiwo Obondoh Foundation education program this year.

During the exercise, the parents and guardians whose children benefited from the program expressed their heartfelt gratitude but challenged the local leaders and other well-wishers to emulate the good gesture to ensure that no child misses an opportunity to go to school just because of lack of school fees.
