- Nandi County has failed to produce a single teacher among the 309 honoured at the National Teachers’ Awards.
- Stakeholders have raised questions over the nomination and selection process that left the county unrepresented.
- Education leaders have called for greater awareness of national recognition programmes to help deserving teachers get nominated in future.
Education stakeholders in Nandi County have expressed shock after the county failed to produce a single teacher among the 309 drawn from across the country who are being feted today at the Kasarani Gymnasium during the National Teachers’ Awards.
The absence of a Nandi representative has raised questions among stakeholders, particularly because the county is widely known for its wealth of talent and has a strong reputation in education and other fields.
Nairobi County leads the list of awardees with 29 teachers, followed by Wajir with 18 and Mombasa with 12, while Kiambu and Nakuru have 11 teachers each. Nandi’s absence has attracted particular attention because neighbouring counties, among them Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Kakamega and Vihiga, all secured representation.
The development has left stakeholders questioning the nomination and selection process and whether enough effort was made to identify and promote outstanding teachers from the county.

However, the absence of a Nandi teacher from the list does not necessarily mean the county lacks outstanding educators. Thousands of teachers continue to serve learners in schools across the county, with many contributing significantly to academic performance, innovation, mentorship and community development. Stakeholders say the issue is whether such achievements are being adequately identified, documented and presented for consideration during national award programmes.
There have been calls for education stakeholders, school administrators and teachers’ representatives in the county to create greater awareness of national recognition programmes and encourage deserving teachers to take part in the nomination process.

The National Teachers’ Awards provide a platform for recognising educators who demonstrate excellence, innovation and dedication in their work, while also allowing counties to showcase the achievements of their teachers. As the 309 teachers gather at Kasarani Gymnasium today, attention in Nandi is expected to shift towards what can be done to ensure the county produces awardees in future editions.
