The indefinite closure of the Machakos County Assembly has jeopardised the disbursement of County bursaries, leaving thousands of needy students to stare at a bleak future as schools reopen for the second term.

Three weeks ago, Speaker Anne Kiusya closed the County Assembly indefinitely to forestall a bid by a section of MCAs to oust her through an impeachment motion.

The speaker said she decided due to insecurity caused by clashes between the two factions of MCAs.

On Monday, Machakos County Assembly Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi, who is among MCAs seeking Speaker Kiusya’s removal, said the speaker’s move was unconstitutional and had put at risk the education of thousands of needy students who could drop out of school due to a lack of school fees.

Speaking at Vota, Machakos, during the burial of Machakos Central Ward Representative  Nicholas Nzioka’s father, Mwanthi said, “The governor was given the green light to issue bursaries in Machakos, but there’s a law which needs to be formulated by the County Assembly, which unfortunately has been closed indefinitely.”

Mwanthi, also the Ekalakala Ward Representative, said MCAs will lead a demonstration of Wananchi against Speaker Kiusya if she fails to open the Assembly soon.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who attended the burial, did not comment on the issue but urged all leaders to work together to benefit the people.
She said residents know the work of every leader and that all leaders will be held to account for their deeds.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi asked the Governor to refrain from the wrangles in the County Assembly, adding that the Assembly should uphold the truth on matters pertaining to the County Government.

“We have asked the Governor to keep off the ongoing wrangles in the County Assembly, and she has done so. The only thing we ask the Assembly to do is to uphold the truth on matters concerning the people of Machakos County,” said Mwangangi.
