The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) has joined Kenyans in celebrating teachers for their contribution to education and national development as the country marks World Teachers’ Day.
KEMI Chief Executive Officer Dr Maurice Odondo hailed teachers as mentors, innovators and leaders whose dedication remains central to the success of the education system. “We recognise teachers as mentors, innovators and leaders whose dedication drives educational success,” Dr Odondo said in a message marking the international day.
The 2026 World Teachers’ Day is being celebrated under the theme “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” marking six decades since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set international standards on teachers’ rights, responsibilities, preparation, recruitment and working conditions.
Dr Odondo said teachers remain at the centre of the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) and the delivery of quality, inclusive and learner-centred education. He reaffirmed KEMI’s commitment to strengthening education leadership and management while supporting teachers to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a changing education environment.

He noted that teachers are increasingly expected to adapt to technological changes, inclusive education, new curriculum demands and growing workloads, making continuous professional development critical. KEMI said it would continue working towards creating an environment in which education managers and teachers are supported and empowered to improve learning outcomes.
The celebration comes as Kenya continues implementing reforms aimed at transforming the education sector and equipping learners with the skills, values and competencies needed to thrive in the future. World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on October 5, provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of educators while drawing attention to the need for better support and working conditions for teachers.
