Members of school Boards of Management (BOMs) in Transmara East Sub-County have undergone comprehensive training aimed at strengthening their capacity to provide effective leadership, oversight and support for the successful management of their institutions.
The three-day training took place between September 3 and 5, 2026, at Emurua Dikirr Boys Senior School.
The training brought together BOM members and education officials, with emphasis placed on good governance, accountability, teamwork, prudent management of school resources and the role of boards in supporting quality education.
The training was led by a team of Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) trainers headed by David Okwayo, who took members through key aspects of school governance and the responsibilities of Boards of Management in creating an enabling environment for teaching and learning.
Addressing the BOM members, Narok County Director of Education Peter Magiri underscored the importance of strong and accountable school leadership in achieving better educational outcomes.
He urged board members to work closely with school administrations, teachers, parents and other stakeholders in addressing challenges facing their institutions.
Magiri challenged the boards to enhance infrastructural development in their schools so that more institutions can attain Category C1 and C2 status for the benefit of local communities.
“There is only one C2 school in the sub-county. My office is ready to work with the boards to ensure more schools attain enhanced status. However, this requires commensurate infrastructural development, which is a key role of the BOM,” he said.
Also addressing the participants, Narok County Quality Assurance and Standards Officer Evangeline Magaki underscored the importance of maintaining quality standards in the delivery of education.
She encouraged BOMs to exercise effective oversight while supporting school administrations in implementing policies and programmes that improve learner outcomes.
Call for full capitation
Kenya National Association of Parents Narok County Chair Peter Sang acknowledged recent demands by national KESSHA officials for an increase in school fees, saying the concerns were legitimate given inflation and other economic realities.
He, however, proposed that the government should instead release capitation in full and enhance the amount allocated per student in senior schools.
According to him, this would shield poor parents from the high cost of education, prevent declining quality and reduce the deterioration of school infrastructure.
The training was also attended by Transmara East Sub-County Director of Education Joshua Kosilei and TSC Sub-County Director Simon Buttuk, who emphasised the need for collaboration between education officers, school leadership and Boards of Management.
The officials challenged BOM members to embrace teamwork, integrity, accountability and continuous improvement as they discharge their mandate.
Schools prepare for senior school transition
Narok County KESSHA Chair Joseph Mutai, who is also the principal of Emurua Dikirr Boys Senior School, lauded the training, saying it came at an opportune time as schools continue adapting to emerging demands in the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) and the transition to senior school.
He was accompanied by Transmara East Sub-County KESSHA Chair Joel Langat, the principal of Kiletien Boys Senior School.
The BOM members expressed appreciation for the training, noting that it had enhanced their understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
They pledged to apply the knowledge and skills gained to strengthen governance and contribute to the growth and improvement of education standards.

The training demonstrated the continued commitment by education stakeholders to strengthen school governance and ensure that Boards of Management are adequately equipped to support schools in providing quality, equitable and holistic education to learners.
