President William Ruto has awarded a university charter to the International Leadership University (ILU), marking a major milestone for the institution and Kenya’s higher education sector.
The charter was presented at State House, Nairobi, with the President describing the development as part of the government's efforts to expand access to quality university education and create more opportunities for young people.
Ruto said the government was prioritising the expansion of educational infrastructure and reforms to the university funding model to make higher education more student-centred and accessible.
He noted that universities must go beyond teaching and training to become centres of research, innovation and knowledge creation, capable of developing solutions to societal challenges and driving technological advancement.(Education News Kenya — https://educationnews.co.ke/news/ruto-awards-ilu-university-charter-as-govt-moves-to-expand-access-to-higher-education)
The President also emphasised the need for Kenyan universities to maintain global standards while aligning their programmes with the country's development aspirations.
ILU has a distinctive approach to higher education, combining academic training, leadership development and Christian values. The institution seeks to produce graduates who are not only academically competent but also responsible, disciplined and equipped to provide leadership in society.
The university traces its roots to the Nairobi International School of Theology, established in 1980. It later expanded its academic programmes and adopted the name International Leadership University in 2013.
Its transition to full university status marks a significant step in its growth and expands the number of chartered institutions offering higher education in Kenya.
The award comes at a time when the government is seeking to strengthen university education through improved infrastructure, funding reforms and greater emphasis on research and innovation.
Ruto said universities must play a central role in shaping the country's future by producing skilled graduates, advancing knowledge and supporting Kenya's social and economic transformation.
