President William Ruto has pledged to sponsor five students every year at the International Leadership University (ILU) for the next 10 years, a commitment that will benefit 50 students if it is implemented throughout the period.
The President made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, during the award of a university charter to ILU at State House, Nairobi.
"For the next, God willing, 10 years, I will sponsor five students. Five students every year," he said.

Ruto said his decision was informed by his longstanding association with Life Ministry, the organisation behind the university, and his confidence in its contribution to education and leadership development.

He disclosed that the university's leadership had not approached him for financial assistance, describing the pledge as a personal initiative arising from his relationship with the institution's sponsor. He said he believed Life Ministry deserved his support and partnership because of his previous interactions with the organisation.
The President said he would engage the university's Vice-Chancellor to agree on the academic programmes that would be covered by the sponsorship. He explained that the courses selected should reflect the institution's core values and priorities, signalling that the scholarships would be aligned with the university's areas of focus.

Ruto did not disclose the amount of money set aside for the programme, the criteria for selecting beneficiaries or whether the sponsorship would cover full tuition and other university expenses. These details are expected to be agreed through consultations between the President and the university's management.

The announcement came as ILU received its university charter, formally recognising its status within Kenya's higher education system and marking a significant milestone in its institutional development.
