President William Ruto has pledged to mobilise government resources to prepare Kenya for hosting the 2029 World Athletics Championships, with infrastructure development and international promotion expected to be key priorities.
The President gave the assurance after meeting World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe at State Lodge Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County, where he reaffirmed the government's commitment to delivering a successful global athletics showcase.
Ruto said Kenya was honoured to have secured the hosting rights and would work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure the country meets the standards required for the prestigious competition.
He said the government was determined to provide the necessary support to make the championships a success, citing the country's longstanding reputation as a global powerhouse in athletics.
Kasarani stadium upgrades underway
Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, which has been designated as the main venue for the championships, is undergoing major renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The upgrades are expected to strengthen the country's sports infrastructure, with additional improvements planned to ensure the facility is ready to host the 2029 competition.
The championships are expected to place Nairobi on the global sporting map, bringing together elite athletes from across the world and offering Kenya an opportunity to showcase its organisational capacity.
Beyond the competition, the event is expected to stimulate economic activity through increased demand for accommodation, transport, tourism and hospitality services, while creating opportunities for local businesses.
Kenya's successful bid also presents an opportunity to build on its rich athletics heritage and inspire a new generation of athletes.
The government is expected to work with World Athletics and other partners to coordinate preparations for the event.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya is among the key government officials involved in the country's sports development agenda as Kenya prepares for major international competitions.
