JSS teachers to down tools over delayed salaries

Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who missed their salary disbursement are threatening to down their tools when the schools reopen for second term next week.

According to Teachers Service Commission (TSC) at least 17, 800 intern teachers in JSS have not received their pay, three months after they were deployed in a move to tackle the issue of teacher shortage in schools.

The commission earlier blamed the delay in deployment of some teachers in institutions as expected on issues with salary processing. As at now only half of JSS teachers have been paid.

The teachers are among the 35, 500 new hires recruited by TSC earlier this year to ensure a smooth transition for the new cohort of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia also cited the late submission of required documents by the affected teachers as the cause of delayed payment.

Nonetheless, Macharia assured those still waiting for payment to remain patient as the commission plans to solve the issue this month.
