Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has elected Dr Calvine Fundi Ominde as the new Dean of the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences (SMPS), marking a new chapter in the institution's academic leadership.
Dr Ominde, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics, emerged victorious following a competitive election in which Dr Phineas Kiogora finished as the runner-up.
The newly elected dean is a JKUAT alumnus and former Chair of the Department of Physics. He takes over from Prof Anthony Waititu, who completed two terms in office after assuming the deanship in October 2022.
The transition presents an opportunity for the school to consolidate its academic achievements while strengthening research, innovation and professional development.
Outgoing dean calls for teamwork
During the handover ceremony, Prof Waititu expressed gratitude to university staff and other stakeholders for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure.
He highlighted teamwork, commitment and collective responsibility as essential ingredients in advancing the school's academic agenda.
Prof Waititu challenged his successor to build on the achievements made during his administration, strengthen academic programmes and create an environment that encourages research, innovation and professional growth.
He emphasised that effective institutional leadership depends on collaboration and mutual respect among members of staff.
Deputy Registrar of Students Dr Teressia Gichungu congratulated Dr Ominde on his election and urged him to work closely with academic staff and students to promote a supportive learning environment.
She stressed the importance of effective leadership, student engagement and collaboration in addressing learners' concerns and improving their overall university experience.
Dr Gichungu encouraged the incoming dean to maintain an open-door policy, listen to students and work with relevant university departments to ensure they receive the necessary academic and social support.
She noted that the school's continued development would require strong working relationships between its leadership, staff, students and university management.
Ominde pledges to build on predecessor's achievements
In his acceptance speech, Dr Ominde thanked members of staff and the university administration for entrusting him with the leadership responsibility.
He described his election as both an honour and a commitment to serve the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences and the wider university community.
The new dean also acknowledged Prof Waititu's contribution, commending him for his leadership and service during his two terms in office.
Dr Ominde pledged to build on the foundation established by his predecessor while pursuing new opportunities for academic growth and institutional development.
He called on members of staff and other stakeholders to work together in advancing the school's objectives.
His priorities include strengthening collaboration, encouraging professional development and promoting the exchange of ideas among academic staff.
As he assumes office, Dr Ominde is expected to work with university management and members of staff to advance the school's strategic priorities.
His leadership comes at a time when universities are increasingly expected to strengthen research capacity, improve academic programmes and equip graduates with relevant scientific and technological competencies.
The School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences plays an important role in advancing scientific knowledge and supporting innovation through teaching, research and academic collaboration.
Dr Ominde's election therefore presents an opportunity to strengthen the school's contribution to JKUAT's broader mission of academic excellence, research and innovation.
