rof Rebecca Mwikali Wambua has been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration at Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), effective February 2027.

The appointment, announced in a congratulatory message celebrating her achievement, will see the distinguished educationist take up one of the university's senior management positions.

Prof Wambua brings extensive experience in university administration, teacher education, digital learning and institutional capacity building, having served in several academic and leadership positions in Kenya's higher education sector.

Her appointment also marks a return to an institution where she previously served as Head of Distance Education and e-Learning, contributing to the development of flexible learning opportunities for students.

According to her professional profile published by the Distance, Open and e-Learning Practitioners' Association of East Africa (DOLPA-EA), Prof Wambua holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Distance Education from the University of Nairobi.

She has worked in the education sector for more than 32 years, including 17 years at the Riara Group of Schools and subsequent service at Kenya Methodist University, Riara University and Africa Nazarene University.
Distinguished career in digital education
Before her latest appointment, Prof Wambua served at Africa Nazarene University, where she held several academic leadership responsibilities, including Director of the Institute of Open, Distance and e-Learning and Coordinator of Education and Counselling programmes.

She is also the founding chairperson of the Distance, Open and e-Learning Practitioners' Association of Kenya and its East African counterpart, DOLPA-EA.

Through these organisations, she has championed collaboration among universities, professional development for lecturers and the adoption of technology-supported teaching and learning.

Her work has extended to institutional training and consultancy, including engagements with Maasai Mara University, the University of Embu, Adventist University of Africa and the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.

She has supported universities in developing online teaching competencies, instructional materials, curriculum frameworks and policies governing open and distance learning.

Prof Wambua has also served as a consultant for the Commonwealth of Learning and was elected to the Crossref Board for the 2026–2028 term, reflecting her involvement in international education and scholarly publishing initiatives.

Her academic contributions include peer-reviewed publications, books and instructional manuals developed for educational institutions.
From an early setback to academic leadership
Prof Wambua's professional journey has also been characterised by determination and resilience.

In a June 2026 interview published by The Standard, she recounted how she initially aspired to become a lawyer but missed the required admission mark by one point.

Encouraged by family members and a former primary school teacher, she pursued teaching, a decision that eventually opened opportunities in educational leadership and university administration.

She later pursued postgraduate studies while balancing professional responsibilities and raising her children.

Her experience helped shape her commitment to expanding access to education, particularly for learners who face geographical, financial and other barriers to conventional classroom learning.
