Kakamega schools shine as national school games kick off

Kakamega County football boys’ representatives in this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSA) championship Shanderema Secondary School kicked off the 2023 ball games campaign with a convincing 8-0 against Khofor Harar from North Easter.

Shanderema who enjoyed a massive home fan base at the Bukhungu Stadium were in Pool A of the football matches.

Buoyed by the support of the County Government of Kakamega led by Governor Fernandes Barasa and Shinyalu Member of Parliament Hon. Fred Ikana, the “Shandy” boys rang their title contention bells with a well worked 6th minute goal and the other seven goals being scored in quick succession in both halves.

In the girls’ category, Butere Girls National School gave away a 1-0 lead to share the spoils with Nairobi’s Dagoretti Girls 1-1 full-time score.

Koyonzo Boys Secondary School, the County’s rugby ambassadors taught Bwake Secondary some rugby lessons with a 19-0 thrashing of the Trans Nzoia side in Pool A of the boys category played at the Western Bulls Rugby Club grounds – “The Bull Ring”.

In the girls matches, Eregi Girls were 24 -5 victors against Koru, Mwira Girls defeated Bushiangala Secondary 10-0 while Bishop Sulumeti Girls hammered Paul Harris 29-0.

The games were officially opened by the Principal Secretary State Department for Basic Education Prof. Belio Kipsang on behalf of Sports Cabinet Secretary Hon. Ababu Namwamba.

Kakamega County Chief Officer for Sports, Youth and Library Services Mr Joseph Abucheri represented H.E the Governor at the event.
