The Kenya Kwanza Government is fully committed to supporting universities in their journey towards education reforms that prioritize quality teaching, research and innovation for all students and academics, education CS Ezekiel Machogu has said.

“Our government remains steadfast in its mission to uplift universities and provide an enabling environment for quality education, research and innovation,” he said.

This was said during the 70th graduation ceremony at the University of Nairobi (UoN).

The CS highlighted the government’s unwavering dedication to reforming universities, which is evident through the implementation of robust measures aimed at addressing their economic crises.

“These measures have successfully tackled pending bills amounting to Ksh70.7 billion,” he revealed.

He said the government is introducing the New Higher Education Funding Model, which has already disbursed Ksh9.2 billion in loans and scholarships to first-year students in universities.

“This new funding model places students at the forefront and ensures that government funding accurately reflects the actual cost of programmes in each university,” he said

Machogu expressed the government’s commitment to relieving universities of their debt burden and actively exploring solutions to address the substantial debts owed to other government agencies such as the KRA, NSSF and NHIF.

Additionally, Machogu urged university alumni to reconnect with their alma maters and actively contribute to various needs of the universities. This can be done through scholarships, student attachments and infrastructure development.
