Parents have been advised to make early observations of signs that may indicate towards loss of their children’s vision.
“If they lose their eyesight, they become dependants for the rest of their life,” he informed the parents.
Speaking to medical practitioners and parents at Nyamira Hospital, Dr. Dennis Barake listed the causes and signs of vision impairment among children.
He named genetic inheritance, presence of cataracts in the eyes and allergies as some of the causes.
The expert said too much dust and extreme coldness in the surroundings also made eyes very sensitive and reactive to some people..
Dr. Barake asked parents of children with poor eyesight not to neglect them but instead give them equal parental care as their normal siblings.
Saying that poor eyesight can be prevented or treated, he reminded parents to visit hospitals frequently to consult on the welfare of their children.
The medic asked the government to provide braille training for enough teachers to enable them teach visually impaired children efficiently.
