Clerics from Rift Valley Region have urged religious leaders to teach school children values and morals that will enable them grow to responsible people in the society.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony at Alkebu Leadership Development Centre held in Elbergon town in Molo sub cunty, the clerics, led by Bishop Reuben Chepkwony, told the religious leaders that when children are taught good morals, Kenya will have  morally upright and disciplined children.

Bishop Chepkwony blamed the poor performance in schools to poor morals by children.

“Religious leaders should follow the teachings of the Holy Book to mould children into morally upright and disciplined people who concentrate on their studies,” he added.

He pointed out that challenges of drug abuse and early pregnancies can be curbed if children know it’s morally wrong of them to engage in fornication and drug usage.

Bishop Chepkwony urged parents to allow their children to attend religious services  and listen to moral teachings to improve their character and behavior.

“Children who are well trained in religious values will instead concentrate of their academics to excel in studies,” he said.

The Bishop also advised secondary school and primary school heads to ensure their schools have chaplains to help in positive character development among students.

Alkebu Leadership Development Center administrator Veronica Wanyama said that they have been training church leaders on how to handle Sunday school children.

“We have a program called Children Ministry and Church planting which aim at teaching church leaders and Sunday school teachers on how to improve their characters, value and respect and also fully concentrate on their education performance “said Mrs. Wanyama.

During the graduation ceremony, over 30 graduands were awarded with certificate in Church Planting and Children Ministry.
