Teachers in Kisumu urged to maintain high moral standards

Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education and ICT John Awiti has urged teachers to maintain high morals and professional standards as espoused in the TSC Code of Ethics.

Awiti said that engaging in untoward acts goes a long way in deriding the teaching profession which the educationist said is a noble profession.

He was speaking at Kisumu Girls High School during a meeting convened to mark World Teachers’ Day where he asked teachers to be cognizant of the fact that the society entrusts the lives of their children with them.

The official, at the same time, advised them to seek alternative ways of addressing issues affecting them instead of resorting to undue violence.

He said that dialogue was the best approach in such a civilized community.

Awiti asked schools in the region to strengthen Guidance and Counseling Departments as a way of addressing sensitive matters affecting students.

He noted that the students they handle are still too young hence the need for caution when handling them in addition to hiring full-time chaplains in the quest to produce holistic individuals.

The CEC advised students to shun drugs warning that they will affect them negatively.

“The lives of many students have been ruined due to drug and substance abuse hence the need to avoid them,” he said.

Awiti asked teachers to build rapport with students in order to cultivate understanding between the two parties.
