Students, teachers, and the community of Davsi Academy in Bomet County are mourning the sudden and tragic death of Jesca Chelangat, a 24-year-old teacher.

It is reported that Chelangat was found lying in a pool of blood, with deep wounds on her head and hand.

According to initial reports, a heated argument broke out on Wednesday, July 30, after Chelangat allegedly expressed her intention to leave the marriage.

It’s alleged that her husband, Lenox Korir who is also the prime suspect in the case, had reportedly been involved in recurring domestic disputes with the deceased, brutally attacked her before fleeing the scene.

The police have since confirmed the arrest of Korir, 27, and he is currently in custody expected to be arraigned in court.

Bomet East Sub- County Commander Michael Singa confirmed the arrest and urged individuals in violent relationships to seek help or leave before it is too late.

It is reported that Korir had initially paid for Chelangat’s college education, and the fatal altercation may have stemmed from tensions surrounding her decision to end the relationship.

Chelangat’s body is currently preserved at Longisa County Referral Hospital as investigations into the matter continue.

Cases of gender-based violence continue to rise across the country, despite numerous efforts by the government and advocacy groups to combat the crisis.

Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) in its 2024 report, showed that 170 women were murdered double the average of 85 cases between 2016-2023. 70% of these were committed by intimate partners.
