Two candidates sitting the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) in Bomet County delivered babies on Tuesday after developing labour pains during the national examinations.

The candidates, from Maraketit and Chemelet Comprehensive Schools, were taken to Sigor Sub-County Hospital and Kenyakoro Health Centre, respectively, where they gave birth.

Bomet County Director of Education Leonard Ngugi confirmed the incidents, saying both candidates were stable and arrangements had been made to enable them to continue with their examinations.

Ngugi said examination officials deployed supervisors and security personnel to the two health facilities to ensure the learners could sit their papers under the required examination regulations.

“All is well as far as the examinations are concerned, and there is no hitch. We only have two cases of two female candidates who developed labour pain and had to sit their exams at the maternity,” he said.

He added that education officials had put in place the necessary measures to ensure the candidates were not disadvantaged by the medical emergencies.

KNUT calls for peaceful examination environment

The incidents occurred as thousands of learners across the country continued with the national assessments, which are being administered under strict supervision to safeguard their integrity.

Meanwhile, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bomet Executive Secretary Desmond Langat urged parents and members of the public to provide candidates with a peaceful environment throughout the examination period.

Langat said learners needed support and encouragement to concentrate on their assessments.

In Bomet County, 104,407 candidates are sitting the national assessments, comprising 78,818 candidates taking the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and 25,589 sitting the KJSEA.

The examinations are being administered in 865 KPSEA centres and 592 KJSEA centres across the county.
