Chuka University is mourning a tragic incident involving a second-year student, Claire, who is reported to have taken her own life shortly after the death of her boyfriend, Kelvin. The heartbreaking events that unfolded over two days have left students and staff in deep shock and sorrow.

According to preliminary information, the couple had been drinking together before a disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation. Notes later recovered from Claire suggest that Kelvin allegedly assaulted her during the argument, forcing her to defend herself with a knife. The altercation ended tragically, with Kelvin suffering fatal stab wounds to the neck and chest.

After the incident, Claire reportedly disappeared from the scene and remained missing for two days. During this period, she wrote two emotional letters reflecting on the events that had taken place.

In the first letter, which was addressed to her family, Claire expressed appreciation, regret, and affection. She described her mother as “the hardest-working woman” she knew and asked her father to continue caring for the family. While acknowledging Kelvin’s death, she maintained that it had not been intentional, writing, “I did not really mean to kill him… I was meant to die alone.”

The second letter was directed to Kelvin’s parents and his sister. In it, she apologised for the loss of their son and brother and said she still had his Equity Bank card. She also left instructions regarding her own burial and warned about the dangers associated with cult involvement, suggesting she had been reflecting deeply on the decisions she had recently made.

Authorities later discovered Claire’s body after conducting a search that lasted two days. Her handwritten letters were recovered alongside her remains.

Chuka University is yet to issue statement

Although the university has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, students say the campus is currently overwhelmed by grief and disbelief. Some students who knew the couple say their relationship had been troubled and increasingly strained over the past year.

The tragedy has also sparked broader conversations about the challenges facing university students today, including alcohol abuse, unstable relationships, and mental health struggles. Many observers say Claire’s letters highlight how rapidly personal conflicts can spiral into irreversible consequences.

As investigations continue, the Chuka University community is grappling with the painful aftermath of the incident. The tragedy has also renewed calls for stronger mental health support systems and counselling services within universities to help students cope with emotional and psychological pressures.
