Over 27,000 students impregnated in Uasin Gishu

Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has decried increased cases of teenage pregnancies in the County.

Speaking to the press Chemno said over 27,000 students have been impregnated in the last four years, leading to them dropping out of school.

“In four years, we have 27,000 cases of teenage pregnancies in Uasin Gishu, if a single school has 400 children, how many schools are those? This is very sad since loosing over 400 girls is uncalled for,” said the Deputy Governor.

He reiterated that the Sub-counties that have badly been affected include Turbo and Ainabkoi.

“I want to call upon the church to come out and help us in advising our young girls, this situation is not good and if nothing will be done in the coming days we will not have girls in our schools, this is a worrying trend,” he added.

Chemno further gave a notice to those impregnating school girls saying stern actions will be taken against those involved.

“As Uasin Gishu County government we will not allow our children to drop out of school because of some few individuals impregnating them, we will not allow our girls to be denied the right to education and those who will be found guilty will be arrested and charged in a court of law. We will also ensure that those students who have dropped out due to pregnancy go back to school and continue with their education,” Chemno said.

He blamed parents for the increase in such cases saying they have left their mandate to teachers.

“As parents let us take care of our children we should always be checking on them that is knowing their friends, where they go and what they are doing on a daily basis. This issue of leaving our students to teachers should stop once and for all,” he said.
