The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is offering Kenyan teachers an opportunity to strengthen their professional skills through its T-Learn Learning Management System, which provides free, self-paced online courses designed to support continuous professional development.
The platform gives teachers an opportunity to learn at their own pace while improving classroom practices, leadership skills, digital literacy and the management of learning institutions. Its flexible learning model allows teachers to pursue professional development alongside their regular teaching responsibilities. The courses cover a wide range of areas, from teacher induction and mentorship to the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning.

Courses for Classroom Teachers

Among the available programmes is Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching, which focuses on supporting teachers as they settle into their professional responsibilities, strengthen their teaching practices and benefit from guidance and collaboration with experienced colleagues. The programme is particularly relevant to teachers entering the profession or adjusting to new responsibilities, as effective induction and mentorship can help them develop confidence, improve classroom management and understand professional expectations.
Another course focuses on ICT Integration and the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning, reflecting the growing importance of technology in education. It provides a professional development opportunity for teachers seeking to incorporate digital resources and emerging AI applications into lesson preparation, instruction and other teaching activities, as schools adapt to changing educational demands and teachers need the skills to use technology responsibly and effectively.
Another programme, Lesson Observation Using the POPI Cycle, addresses lesson observation as a tool for professional learning and improvement, helping teachers reflect on their instructional approaches, identify areas for development and receive constructive feedback. Mathematics and science teachers can also access the School Based Teacher Support System (SBTSS) course, which strengthens professional support for educators in these subjects, while the Transformative Pedagogies course focuses on approaches that can make teaching and learning more engaging and responsive to learners' needs.

Courses for School Leaders

The T-Learn platform also offers Induction for Heads of Institutions, targeting school leaders who need to strengthen their understanding of institutional leadership and management, as effective school leadership is essential to creating supportive learning environments, coordinating teachers, managing resources and improving educational outcomes. For school administrators, the platform provides Performance Contracting for Heads of Institutions, addressing performance management and institutional accountability, while the Risk Management course equips participants with an opportunity to develop their understanding of identifying, assessing and managing risks that may affect school operations.
Together, the programmes cover key aspects of professional growth, classroom instruction, digital transformation, school leadership and institutional management. The self-paced format gives teachers flexibility to organise their learning around their work schedules, and the courses are offered free of charge, removing tuition costs as a barrier to accessing these professional development opportunities.

Teachers interested in strengthening their competencies can explore the TSC T-Learn platform to establish which courses are available to them and the requirements for enrolment and certification. However, teachers should confirm the current registration procedures, course completion requirements and certification arrangements through official TSC communication before enrolling.

The initiative offers an opportunity for teachers to take greater responsibility for their professional growth while strengthening the skills needed to respond to changing classroom demands and leadership responsibilities. For Kenya's education system, sustained teacher development remains important in improving instructional quality, supporting curriculum implementation and ensuring that learners benefit from effective teaching and well-managed institutions.
