West Pokot County has celebrated the retirement of Madam Grace Chepyatich Kiralem after an illustrious 40-year career in the teaching profession, with leaders, education officials, family members and friends gathering to honour her contribution to education, motherhood and society.
The retirement celebration, held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, provided an opportunity to recognise an educator whose professional journey has been defined by dedication, perseverance and a commitment to shaping generations of learners.
Born in 1966, Kiralem began her teaching career in 1986 after completing her college training in Baringo.
Over the years, she served in several learning institutions, including Paroo, Nginyang and Kitalaposho schools, where she contributed to the academic and personal development of learners.
Her four decades in the profession came with various challenges, but she looks back on her career with satisfaction, having enjoyed the opportunity to teach, mentor and guide children towards a brighter future.
The occasion was attended by Prof John Lonyangapuo, West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor, Curriculum Support Officer (CSO) Mark Limika, education stakeholders, family members and friends.
In their congratulatory messages, the leaders recognised the important role teachers play in shaping society, noting that education extends beyond classroom instruction to character development, discipline, mentorship and preparation for responsible citizenship.
They emphasised that teachers deserve recognition and support because their contribution to society is reflected not only in academic achievements but also in the values and opportunities they help instil in generations of learners.
Husband praises her dedication to motherhood
One of the touching moments of the celebration came when Kiralem's husband, Yohana Locherno, praised her exceptional mothering abilities and dedication to raising their children with good morals.
Locherno appreciated his wife's commitment to motherhood, particularly her role in instilling discipline, respect and responsible behaviour in their children.
He recognised that her contribution to the family went beyond providing parental care, noting her determination to raise children who understood the importance of education, good conduct and strong moral values.
His tribute highlighted another important dimension of Kiralem's life: while she spent decades shaping learners in classrooms, she also devoted herself to nurturing and preparing her children for responsible adulthood.
Kiralem placed great importance on her children's education, consistently encouraging them to work hard, remain disciplined and pursue academic excellence.
Her encouragement and commitment to their education paid off, with most of her children progressing to A-Level education.
Her family's achievements reflect the importance she attached to education and the role parents play in supporting their children's academic journeys.
The recognition by her husband further demonstrated how her professional commitment to education was complemented by her responsibilities at home.
Retired teacher urges learners to work hard
Reflecting on her journey, Kiralem emphasised the importance of hard work as a foundation for success.
She encouraged young learners to remain focused on their studies, embrace discipline and never allow difficult circumstances to discourage them from pursuing their dreams.
Her message was that education requires patience, determination and personal commitment, and that young people must take advantage of the opportunities available to them.

The message also reinforced the need for parents, teachers and communities to work together to ensure children receive quality education and develop strong moral foundations.
As she exits active teaching service, Kiralem leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond the institutions where she worked.
Her 40 years in education offer valuable lessons to young and upcoming teachers entering the profession.
Her journey demonstrates the importance of patience, commitment, discipline and dedication to duty.
She provides an example of how teachers can balance professional responsibilities with family obligations while remaining committed to nurturing future generations.
Her retirement presents an opportunity for younger teachers to learn from experienced educators, appreciate the teaching profession and understand that lasting professional impact is built through consistent service.
Her story also reminds the teaching fraternity that the true reward of education lies in the lives transformed through years of commitment and mentorship.
For her family, the celebration marked the culmination of years of sacrifice, commitment and shared responsibility.
Her husband's tribute, her children's educational progress and the recognition by leaders reflected the different dimensions of a life devoted to nurturing others.
Although her formal teaching career has come to an end, the lessons she imparted, the children she mentored and the values she upheld will continue to influence families and communities.
