Two schools in Moyale have moved their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates to safer ground after fighting across the Ethiopian border put pupils within reach of stray fire. Sessi Mixed Secondary School and St Mary’s Mixed Secondary School made the move following a night in which explosives fell on the Kenyan side of the line.
Moyale Deputy County Commissioner Benedict Munywoki said the decision was driven by learner safety. Stray bullets fired from Ethiopia had struck Sessi School, he explained, and with fighting still raging beyond the border, officials were unwilling to leave the candidates where they were.
Security officers later detonated three rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) that had landed in the area. Authorities reached the scene on Sunday, November 1, 2026, after a report of unexploded materials lying near Sessi Primary School. The devices were destroyed in a controlled blast, and no injuries have been reported so far.(Education News Kenya — https://educationnews.co.ke/news/moyale-kcse-candidates-relocated-as-stray-bullets-from-ethiopia-hit-schoolmoyale-kcse-candidates-relocated-as-stray-bullets-from-ethiopia-hit-school)
For the students, the disruption comes at the worst possible moment. They are sitting the exam that decides their place in college or university, and instead of revising in familiar classrooms, they now face unfamiliar surroundings and the memory of explosions close to home.
Families in Sessi say the fear has seeped into every household. One resident said a blast went off in the village at about 8:30 pm on Sunday, after a projectile fired from Ethiopia landed there. Since then, the resident said, children have struggled to sleep. The community, the resident added, is pleading for security so that families can feel safe again.
