Kanyawanga High School Alumni Association is set to construct an ultra-modern laboratory within the school to boost performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics related subjects. In the proposed architectural design, the three floor storey building with a modern design will house the physics, chemistry and biology laboratories on separate floors.
The alumni led by their secretary general Mr. Donald Ogallo noted that the current laboratories have been in use for decades and aren’t in suitable conditions.
Speaking to journalists after unveiling the plan, the alumni said they adopted the initiative after realizing that students weren’t exhibiting stellar performances in science subjects
“We have several projects to undertake but we prioritized on the construction of a modern laboratory. The current facility is in poor state and cannot support proper learning during practical lessons,” said Mr. Ogallo.
Mr. Ken Abuka, the chairman of the teams’ development committee said the team saw it wise to set up a laboratory since Science, Technology and Mathematics form a key pillar in post-secondary education. He also thought of the construction as a way of giving back to the society.
The school Principal Mr. Jacob Mbogo applauded the group and called on alumni groups from other schools to embrace the idea and attitude of supporting schools towards upgrading their infrastructural development.
Speaking to Education News, Mbogo said the group consisting of 249 former students had raised money and issued Kshs 630,000 as bursary to bright but needy students. The bursary kitty launched in 2019 sponsored 60 students that year before scaling the number to 87 in 2020.
The School had a mean grade of 7.2 in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
