Garissa County Governor has given Sh40 million to institutions of higher learning in bursary in his County.

After meeting representatives from several institutions at Garissa Agricultural Training Institute, Ali Korane distributed bursary cheques to 1,749 students from the 57 institutions of higher learning.

He reiterated that livestock farmers have not recovered from the effects of the biting drought that wiped off most of their livestock.

“We understand the difficulty of running schools without money, but at the same time it would make little sense to send the students for school fees when their parents do not have  much to offer. For  that reason  we have opted to continue gifting substantial  funds to students  and I plead with school heads to desist from sending students home under the prevailing conditions in the dry spell,’’ noted Korane, adding  his administration  was obliged  to assist parents going through the hard times.

The Governor said the administration considered all counties in the fair distribution of disbursement of bursary funds from all Sub-counties bursary committees.

He revealed that his administration was committed to bridge the gap by ensuring that they will educate the young ones as well as continue to make sure they take teaching courses.

“In this respect, my administration will continue to pay school fees for all those who take teaching courses,’’ said the governor who promised more resources in next financially year’s bursary allocation.

At the function, Garissa University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahmed Warfa spoke on behalf of all institutions of higher learning within the county.

Prof. Warfa echoed the county government pledge to increase the allocation of bursary funds in the next financial year’s budget.

“Since the fund has helped many needy students the process of increasing the amount in kitty will go a long way in improving the educational standards the region,” said the Don.
