Bungoma’s Marell Academy director Ellis Houghton Ominde passes on

Marell Academy, a private school in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, is mourning the death of its founder and director, Ellis Houghton Ominde.

According to a statement released by the school on Monday, Ominde passed away on August 4, sending shockwaves through the institution and the broader education community.

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we write to inform you of the passing of our beloved Founder and Director,” read the notice signed by Head Teacher Ajambo Emily.

Ominde, who has been described as a visionary educationist, is credited with transforming Marell Academy into one of the most respected schools in Western Kenya. The school is renowned for its academic excellence, discipline, and strong moral foundation.

“He was not only a visionary leader but also a compassionate individual who played a key role in the growth and success of our school,” the statement said.

The school said funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course to allow friends, alumni, and the public to pay their last respects.

Leaders, parents, and former students have continued to pay tribute to Ominde, describing him as a dedicated mentor and pillar of the Bungoma education sector.

He leaves behind a legacy that, according to the school, will “forever be cherished.
