Kibabii University will confer an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (DHumLitt) (Honoris Causa) on Bungoma Governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka.
The degree will be awarded at the university's 11th graduation ceremony on Friday, November 20, 2026.
The notification was issued by Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Joshua Ondura Ogendo. It says the award was approved by the University Senate and Council under Section 9(1)(c) of the Kibabii University Charter (2015) and Statute XLIV of the Kibabii University Statutes (2021).
The university said the honour recognises Lusaka's leadership in public administration, devolved governance, higher education and environmental stewardship. It listed the following record:
- Governor: He was the first Governor of Bungoma County, from 2013 to 2017, and was re-elected in August 2022. He is serving his second term. In October 2026, he was elected Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG).
- Senate: He was the second Speaker of the Senate of Kenya from 2017 to 2022.
- Civil service: He served as a District Officer, District Commissioner and later Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock Development.
Kibabii University said Lusaka played a key role in the institution's growth. As governor, it said, he supported the administrative process that led to the university receiving its Charter in 2015. It said he also contributed to curriculum development, including the establishment of the Bachelor of Cooperative and Entrepreneurship Management degree programme.
The university also cited his contribution to environmental conservation and eco-tourism initiatives, particularly in the Mount Elgon ecosystem.
Kibabii University has invited members of the public, academic leaders and regional stakeholders to the graduation ceremony.
