- Parents and residents of Kamusa are raising concerns over the safety of children using the Bomet-Kaplong road.
- They say speeding vehicles and inadequate road-safety measures are putting learners at risk while crossing the busy road.
- The residents want speed-control measures, proper signage and stronger enforcement of traffic rules around schools and ECDE centres.
Residents of Kamusa along the Bomet-Kaplong road have raised concerns over the safety of children attending schools in the area following a series of road accidents.
The residents say speeding motorists, lack of speed bumps and inadequate road signage have exposed school-going children to danger.
Led by trader Joyce Kirui, the residents called for urgent intervention to improve road safety, particularly around schools and ECDE centres.
Kirui said she often suspends her business to help children cross the busy road as they make their way to and from school.
“I sometimes have to stop my business so that I can help children cross the road. Some of them, especially those in ECDE centres, are forced to wait for a long time before they can cross,” Kirui said.
She appealed to authorities to install appropriate road signs and other safety measures along the section.
“The safety of our children should be given priority. We need proper signage and measures to control speeding in this area,” she said.
Residents demand action
Her concerns were echoed by Mary Sang, who said residents had previously raised the issue with authorities but little had been done to address it.
“We have raised this matter before, but no action has been taken. Drivers should slow down and observe traffic rules because our children are the ones suffering,” Sang said.
She said several children had sustained injuries in road accidents in the area.
The concerns come after a woman died on the spot while her daughter sustained injuries when the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit by an allegedly speeding lorry.
The woman was reportedly taking her daughter to school when the accident occurred.
The lorry driver fled the scene after the crash but was later arrested after the vehicle overturned a short distance away.
Police confirmed the incident and said investigations had been launched.

Residents are now calling for speed-control measures, road signage and greater enforcement of traffic rules to protect pedestrians and school-going children along the busy road.
