Alice Rianga, a second-year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, was found dead in Barkowino Forest days after she went missing. The discovery has deeply disturbed many families and sparked intense online debate about the risks associated with flashy lifestyles among young university students from modest backgrounds.
The 20-year-old was pursuing a degree in education science, specialising in mathematics and chemistry. She left Bondo town on May 7 while returning to campus, but never arrived. Her phone later went off, raising concern among friends who could no longer reach her.
On Saturday, women searching for firewood discovered her body in Barkowino Forest within Bondo Sub-county in Siaya County. Detectives believe she may have been murdered elsewhere before the body was dumped at the scene because there were no visible signs of a struggle.
Her roommate later identified a 28-year-old Tanzanian, identified as Maximillian John Madeni, as a man Alice had reportedly been dating. Police arrested him on Monday.
Madeni works as a gold dealer, and investigators are still trying to reconstruct Alice’s final movements before her death. Although the investigation has progressed quickly, several questions remain unresolved as the family awaits a full postmortem report.
Beyond the murder itself, public attention has also focused on Alice’s lifestyle. Images circulating online portray a young woman who appeared to enjoy luxuries associated with affluent lifestyles uncommon among ordinary university students.
She visited destinations such as Diani, Zanzibar, and the Maasai Mara for holidays. She frequently dined at high-end restaurants and preferred air travel whenever travelling to Nairobi or Mombasa instead of using buses or matatus. Friends and acquaintances described her lifestyle as almost dreamlike, even by the standards of financially stable adults.
Despite coming from a humble background, Alice reportedly socialised within wealthy circles involving older men. One individual frequently mentioned online is a man known as Salvoguy. Social media discussions continue questioning how she transitioned into such circles and whether that lifestyle exposed her to danger.
Some speculate that jealousy or discovery of other relationships could have played a role, though police have not confirmed any motive yet. Others insist that no matter her choices, she did not deserve such a brutal end.
Her death comes shortly after the tragic case of Consolata Githinji, another student whose mysterious fall from an Airbnb apartment in Nairobi raised widespread suspicion. The two incidents have heightened fears among parents worried about the safety of their daughters studying away from home.
Students at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University staged protests demanding faster investigations and improved security around the institution. They also urged leaders to confront the growing dangers linked to campus life and urban temptations facing young people.
Alice’s family remains devastated by the tragedy. Reports indicate that her father collapsed after receiving news of her death. Relatives described her as an intelligent and ambitious young woman who dreamed of becoming a teacher. The family is now preparing for burial arrangements as investigations continue.
