Suicide or murder? Puzzle of Yatta pupil’s death

By Makoma Musyoka

A postmortem report has revealed that a 14-year-old primary school pupil in Yatta, Machakos County, initially believed to have committed suicide may have been murdered.

The body of Christine Kioko, a Standard Eight pupil at Kitheuni Primary School, was found hanging from a tree outside her home on Sunday.

A neighbour who spotted the body at around 1pm alerted the police.

Area police boss Mary Njoki said the girl mother’s Ngii Mukika had gone to church when the body was discovered.

“We are still investigating the incident to establish whether the girl committed suicide or might have been killed and the body hung there,’’ the police boss had said when the officers collected the body.

Former Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi, who attended the girl’s burial ceremony, said the DCI had informed him that the postmortem results pointed to murder and urged the police to find the culprit.

“We all thought it was suicide but the doctor proved otherwise through a postmortem,” said Mwangangi.

The former MP said the community should not relent in pursuit of justice for the pupil.

The police boss said they were interrogating some suspects.

“Their statements are being recorded and any one who will be found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted,” said Njoki.
