Third- and fourth-year students at Makueni University College have protested a decision by South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) to relocate them to its main campus at Kwa Vonza in Kitui County, just five months after they moved to Wote.

The students have vowed to remain at the Makueni campus, opposing the planned transfer, which they say would disrupt their studies after settling into the learning environment.

The protests follow a directive issued by the university administration requiring all students at the Wote campus to move to the main campus by November 15, 2026.

University sets November 15 relocation deadline

According to a report published by Education News on October 23, the decision was reached during a University Council meeting held on October 21.

An internal communication signed by Academic Registrar Prof Peter Njuru directed the affected students to complete the relocation within the stipulated period.

The university has announced that it will provide transport for students moving from Wote to Kitui, with arrangements coordinated through the Office of the Dean of Students.

The administration has also identified 231 available spaces in official student hostels, comprising 74 beds for male students and 157 for female students.

An additional 27 privately owned rooms in Kyua have been identified for students seeking accommodation outside the university hostels.

Students resist planned transfer

However, the arrangements have not quelled opposition among students who have already spent five months at the Makueni campus and are resisting the directive to return to Kitui.

The students argue that the relocation would disrupt their studies and require them to adjust to another learning environment after settling at Wote.

The Wote campus, which began operating in 2012 as a satellite campus of SEKU, was elevated to Makueni University College in November 2025 after meeting the requirements for constituent college status.

The relocation decision has raised concerns about continuity in learning, accommodation and the adjustment students may face when moving between campuses.

Although the university has outlined transport and accommodation arrangements, the affected students remain opposed to the directive.

The students' demonstration puts pressure on the university administration to address their concerns as the November 15 deadline approaches.
