Kibabii University has suspended teaching and learning and ordered students to vacate the campus following student protests triggered by the killing of a colleague in a night attack.
The university directed all students to leave the institution by 3pm on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after four students were reportedly attacked by unknown assailants near the university on Monday night.
One student died at the scene after suffering a severe cut to the back of the neck, while three others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The killing sparked angry demonstrations, with students taking to the streets to demand urgent action over their security.
The protesters blocked the Chwele-Kanduyi Road near Cardinal Otunga Girls High School, lit a bonfire and disrupted traffic as they called for enhanced security around the university and its neighbouring areas.
In a notice, the university said teaching and learning activities had been suspended following the unrest and directed students residing in university hostels to vacate the institution by the stated deadline.
Students living in the neighbourhood were also advised to seek alternative accommodation until normal academic activities resume.
The university has not indicated when teaching and learning will resume, saying further communication would be issued.
The students are demanding investigations into the killing and increased security patrols to protect learners, particularly those living outside the university compound.
Police are expected to investigate the attack and establish the identity and motive of the assailants.
