The stage is set for an exciting 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Western Region Term Two Games after counties across the region concluded their championships and unveiled teams that will battle for regional honours.
Kakamega County will be represented by Butere Boys High School and Musingu High School in boys’ football after the two sides emerged as the county’s top performers.
In the girls’ category, Butere Girls and Mwira Girls secured qualification to the regional championships.
Elsewhere, Vihiga County crowned Vihiga High School as the Rugby Sevens champions following a hard-fought 5-0 extra-time victory over Senende Boys High School after normal time had ended in a goalless draw.
Both schools have qualified for the Western Region Rugby Sevens Championships.
Eight-team football lineup complete
The list of boys’ football qualifiers for the Western Region Games has now taken shape, with teams from Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega and Vihiga set to battle for supremacy.
From Bungoma County, Bukembe Boys High School and Kibabii Boys High School secured qualification after impressive campaigns in the county games.
Busia County will be represented by football giants Nambale Boys High School and Kolanya Boys High School, while Vihiga County’s flag will be carried by Mbale Boys High School and Emusire Boys High School.
The six teams join Kakamega’s representatives, Butere Boys and Musingu, to complete the eight-team lineup for the regional championships.
Bungoma to host regional games
Bungoma County will host this year’s Western Region Secondary School Games, with organisers confirming that group-stage matches will be played at Bungoma High School.
The knockout stages, including the semi-finals and the grand finale, will be hosted at the iconic Masinde Muliro Stadium.
Tournament officials are expected to conduct the draw soon, with the eight teams set to be divided into two highly competitive pools.
The format is expected to produce intense encounters as traditional football powerhouses and emerging contenders battle for places in the knockout stages.
Battle for regional supremacy
With schools such as Nambale, Kolanya, Musingu, Butere, Bukembe, Kibabii, Mbale and Emusire all boasting rich football traditions, fans can expect a highly competitive championship as teams chase the coveted Western Region title and qualification for the national games.
