The education office in Samia sub county, Busia county has temporarily closed Sigalame Boys High School for a week following a second fire incident at the school in a period of two weeks.
Samia sub county education officer Dominic Ope announced the closure after visiting the school a few hours after a dormitory burnt down.
Ope said it was necessary for the school to be closed to enable the school management and the education office to organize themselves and dig deeper into the cause of the fire.
Samuel Kukali, the school deputy principal said the fire started when students were in class and their efforts to put it off were in vain.
The incident happened weeks after another dormitory burnt down. The cause of both incidents is yet to be established.
The school management has appealed to the government and well-wishers to come in and help the affected students who lost their valuable.
The school is also faced with the challenge of where to house the affected students and they have been forced to use makeshift dormitories in some classrooms. They appealed for help in building dormitories for the students.
Sigalame Boys is one of the best performing secondary schools in Busia county and has topped the region severally in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
