Poverty has exposed primary school girls to predators, NGO boss

By Erick Nyayiera

Poverty levels in the rural settings of Nyanza have greatly exposed primary school girls to exploitation by predators making them drop out of school.

GENO community organization patron Linet Olima disclosed that hundreds of school girls from poor families have dropped out of school because of early pregnancies.

“Boda boda riders are the immediate predators since they give the girls money in return for sexual favours,” Olima said.

She urged parents to be careful about their children’s relationships with suspicious individuals.

Speaking during a sanitary towels donation drive at Atilili primary school in Bondo town, Olima appealed to the government to ensure steady and consistent supply of sanitary pads to girls arguing that the inconsistencies made girls skip classes.

Olima said that her sanitary pads program targets all primary schools in Bondo sub- county and thousands of school girls.
