The Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation, Kilifi County chairperson, Witness Tsuma has urged the Judiciary in the country to give men found to have impregnated school girls deterrent sentence.
Speaking to Education News from Kilifi town recently, she said that the move would discourage others with similar intentions in future.
The chairperson also decried the high dropout rate among school girls in the county, which she attributed to early pregnancies and poverty.
She added that the situation has contributed to low education levels, urging education stakeholders in the region to take drastic measures with a view of addressing the situation once for all.
“Many school girls in the area have dropped out of school due to early pregnancies and early marriages,” lamented the chairperson.
Tsuma appealed to the education stakeholders in the county to cooperate fully and rally all school girls who dropped out so that they could go back to school and continue with their education.
She called for mutual efforts to give girls education a priority so that the education levels in the region rise.

The chairperson further said that the county’s rapid development need educated people who will be charged with the responsibility of designing, planning and implementing community development projects.
“Kenya is leading in Gender Based Violence (GBV), early pregnancies and early marriages, and it is unfortunate that Kilifi county is among the counties in the country which are leading “, explained Tsuma.
She also revealed that Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation is currently advocating for the girls who dropped out of school to go back to school, saying that without them the county will miss leaders in future.
She also urged donor partners in the country, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Well Wishers, Charitable Organisations and even individuals to come forward and support the education of the girl child in the county.
She appealed to the county government of Kilifi to stablish evening classes in every primary school in the region so as to enable the young mothers who dropped out of school due to early pregnancies and early marriages to continue with their education.
