Over 1,000 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers from Uasin Gishu county held a peaceful demonstration to demand employment on pensionable and permanent terms

Speaking to the press after the demonstrations, the teachers asked Governor Jonathan Bii to quickly change their employment terms since former governor Jackson Mandago didn’t fulfill his promise of doing so.

Truphena Chirchir revealed that the county portal indicates they were confirmed for permanent terms in July yet the new administration is asking them to sign another three months contract.

“It’s unfair that we’ve been told to sign another three months contract. We have suffered a lot. We don’t want to be employed on contracts again.” said Chirchir.

Caroline Lagat, a teacher at Kaplasu Primary School, asked the new governor to fasten the process of employing them on permanent terms since they were suffering.

“It’s sad and frustrating to be paid the same amount of money ten years down the line,” she added.

Loise Kirwa pointed out that most of them have degrees and diplomas yet their salaries have never been reviewed.

“All of us are being paid Ksh 10,000 per month yet our salaries should be reviewed to  match our qualifications,” she said.

Jael Jerotich expressed dissatisfaction at having worked for many years yet she doesn’t have anything to show for it.
