Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General and current Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Commissioner Wilson Sossion has paid tribute to his mentor and predecessor, Mzee Francis Ng’ang’a, crediting him with shaping his leadership journey in the education sector and trade union movement.
In a message shared after meeting Ng’ang’a, Sossion described him as a towering figure in KNUT’s history whose leadership helped strengthen the union and instil discipline, courage and commitment among its officials.
Sossion said Ng’ang’a gave him an opportunity to serve as a union official in 2001 after rising through the ranks at the Bomet Branch, an experience he said laid the foundation for his subsequent leadership roles.
He praised Ng’ang’a’s firm, vibrant and charismatic leadership following the death of former KNUT Secretary-General Ambrose Adongo, saying it helped stabilise the union during a critical period.
Mentorship and leadership journey
Sossion attributed his progression from a branch official to KNUT Secretary-General, Member of Parliament and eventually TSC Commissioner to the mentorship and guidance he received from the veteran unionist.
He said Ng’ang’a taught him the importance of fearless and principled leadership in defending teachers’ interests, adding that his commitment to teachers remained unchanged despite moving from the union to the commission.
“From defending teachers in the Union to now serving them at the Commission, the mission remains the same,” Sossion said.
He added that Ng’ang’a remained sharp, humorous and passionate about teachers’ welfare despite his advanced age.
Sossion thanked God for his mentor’s life, wisdom and continued concern for Kenyan teachers, recognising his enduring contribution to the union and the teaching profession.
