Seven inmates at Bomet Government of Kenya (GK) Prison are among candidates sitting the ongoing 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, in an effort to extend educational opportunities to learners serving prison sentences.
The seven are taking their national examinations within the correctional facility, where arrangements have been made to enable them to continue their education despite their incarceration.

Their participation comes shortly after 11 other learners at the same facility sat the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

The examinations underscore the role of correctional institutions in providing opportunities for personal development, rehabilitation and skills acquisition, allowing inmates to pursue their academic ambitions while serving their sentences.

The State Department for Correctional Services has previously emphasised the importance of formal education in transforming the lives of offenders and preparing them for reintegration into society.

In August 2026, Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Dr Salome Beacco said the government had prioritised access to formal education for inmates as part of wider reforms aimed at strengthening rehabilitation and reducing repeat offending.

The department has also been working with education stakeholders and development partners to support learning programmes in prisons, including teacher training and preparation for national examinations.

The participation of learners in both KCSE and KJSEA shows that incarceration does not necessarily end one's educational journey, with inmates getting an opportunity to pursue academic qualifications that could improve their prospects after release.
