A police officer is missing after a multi-agency team conducting investigations into suspected examination malpractice was attacked by students at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Kisii County.
The Thursday morning incident occurred at around 10.30am when officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and National Intelligence Service (NIS) visited the institution following reports of suspected irregularities in the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The team reportedly discovered a laptop hidden behind the school's administration offices and alerted DCI officers based at Nyamache to respond.
However, before the investigators could arrive, students allegedly turned rowdy and attacked the monitoring team, targeting police officers and KNEC officials in a confrontation that quickly escalated.
During the chaos, the students reportedly took control of a Toyota Succeed, registration number KCV 143M, belonging to Corporal Leonard Siele, extensively damaging the vehicle and stealing personal belongings kept inside.
Corporal Siele was reportedly seriously assaulted during the confrontation and has since gone missing, prompting efforts to establish his whereabouts.
Concerns over examination officials' safety
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of examination officials and security personnel deployed to safeguard the integrity of national examinations.
Earlier reports indicated that two students had also sustained serious injuries during the unrest and were receiving medical attention.
The confrontation comes amid heightened scrutiny of examination administration at the institution, which has previously faced allegations of examination malpractice.
The school's new principal is reportedly pursuing tougher measures to curb examination irregularities, an approach that has allegedly generated resistance since his arrival.
The latest developments have placed the institution under renewed scrutiny, with questions emerging over the circumstances that led to the attack, the missing officer and the reported discovery of the laptop.
Authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action against those found responsible.
