Police in Embu have arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a KCSE candidate and sitting examinations on behalf of another person at Urban Integrated Senior School.

The suspect was arrested at the examination centre after reportedly sitting the ongoing 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations for another registered candidate since Monday.

He was subsequently escorted to Embu Police Station, where he is being held as investigations continue. His motorcycle, which he allegedly used to travel to the examination centre, was also impounded.

The incident comes as 141 private candidates are undertaking their KCSE examinations at the Urban Integrated Senior School centre.

The whereabouts of the actual registered candidate remain unknown, with preliminary reports indicating that the two men may be acquaintances.
DCI investigates examination impersonation
Embu County Director of Education Samuel Mutemi, together with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), is investigating how the suspect managed to access the examination centre and sit the examinations.

Investigators are also seeking to establish whether other individuals were involved in facilitating the alleged impersonation.

Examination impersonation is a criminal offence under the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) legal framework and attracts penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

The incident has renewed concerns over examination security and the effectiveness of measures put in place to prevent malpractice during national examinations.
