Murang'a University of Technology has appealed for calm among students as investigations continue into the death of Kelvin Murimi, a second-year Education Science student.
In a notice issued on October 4, 2026, the university's Office of the Dean of Students expressed condolences to Murimi's family, friends and the wider university community, while urging students to remain calm and allow investigators to establish what happened.
The institution said preliminary findings had reportedly linked a fellow student to the incident, but cautioned against treating the information as a final determination of guilt. The university stressed that the person linked to the death should be accorded due process as investigations continue. "These findings should not be taken as a final determination of guilt," the university said.
The administration also warned students against speculation, confrontation, threats or any actions that could interfere with the ongoing investigations. It urged members of the university community to remain united and allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and lawful investigation.
The death of Murimi has reportedly sparked concern and anger among students, with the university acknowledging calls for justice. "Kelvin deserves justice, and that justice is best served through a thorough, impartial, and lawful investigation," the notice stated.
The message was signed by Dean of Students Dr Asige Chavulimu, PhD and copied to senior university officials, including the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Registrar and Dean of the School of Education. The university said it would continue to support its students and staff as the matter is investigated.
