Meru Central branch Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Executive Secretary Caxton Miungi has reportedly set aside his political ambitions and stepped aside from the Meru senatorial race to pave the way for the Party of National Unity (PNU) nomination exercise.
The reported decision, which caught many of his supporters in the KNUT fraternity unawares, is expected to be discussed at a round-table meeting before a final decision is made.
Miungi remains the Meru Central branch KNUT Executive Secretary and would only relinquish the position if he decides to resign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
After reportedly stepping aside, Miungi is expected to hold a closed-door meeting with PNU officials to seek an amicable solution.
Supporters react to Miungi's political move
"PNU's Caxton Miungi, who is also the KNUT Meru Central branch Executive Secretary, has stepped down from his senatorial bid and paved the way for Pius Mutua. Miungi was also vying and has been on the campaign trail for the Meru County PNU position," one of his supporters said in a social media post.
The supporters claimed that Miungi had already taken over the position of the party's county chairperson following deliberations.
Dick Mwirigi encouraged leaders and residents to plan to contest either elective or nominated positions, insisting that those holding party positions stand a better chance of being considered when vacancies arise.
He urged residents to join registered political parties, adding that those holding party positions have a better chance of being considered for nominations.
"Only those in the anticipated party nomination exercise positions stand a chance of being picked," he said.
"Take this to the nearest bank and withdraw it after a few months. You will get the real shares," Mwiti said.
