Makueni County Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on Thursday launched the County Water and Sanitation Strategy and Investment Plan 2025-2030, a roadmap to guide investments in water infrastructure, sanitation services and climate resilience.
Improving sanitation and hygiene in schools and health facilities is among the key priorities of the County's new five-year Water and Sanitation Strategy
The plan seeks to address persistent challenges, including inadequate funding, climate change and water governance gaps, while strengthening coordination among the county government, the national government, development partners and communities.
Besides improving sanitation in learning institutions, the strategy prioritises expanding access to clean and reliable water, strengthening water institutions and promoting sustainable management of water resources.(Education News Kenya — https://educationnews.co.ke/news/makueni-launches-2025-2030-water-strategy-with-focus-on-school-and-hospital-sanitation)
It also stresses gender equality, noting the disproportionate impact of water insecurity on women and girls. It highlights the role of irrigation in improving food security and livelihoods in the largely arid and semi-arid county.
The strategy was developed jointly by national and county government technical teams, with support from the World Bank and input from stakeholders. It provides a framework for equitable, inclusive and sustainable water and sanitation services across Makueni.
