Teacher trainees at Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) who need to retake referred examinations will have a chance to clear their papers before the March 2027 graduation, following an announcement by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
The decision follows an intervention by the Kenya Teachers Colleges Principals Association (KTCPA), after which the council scheduled a dedicated supplementary assessment series for early next year.
Under a circular signed by KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr David Njengere, registration for the supplementary tests opens on November 9, 2026, and closes on December 15, 2026. The assessments will run from January 18 to February 12, 2027.

The window is open to candidates who were referred in past sittings across various diploma programmes. These include the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE) and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE).

Trainees who missed their 2026 Year One and Year Two College Based Assessments (CLBAs) in DTE PP&P and DSTE will also be allowed to sit those modules alongside their summative papers.
KNEC has set operational thresholds for colleges acting as assessment centres. Institutions registering fewer than five candidates will not be allowed to operate as independent centres and must direct their trainees to approved centres handling more than 10 candidates. Any centre registering fewer than 10 trainees will be hosted by a larger, KNEC-approved institution during the examination period.

Principals are expected to complete all institutional paperwork, including signed nominal rolls and medical reports for trainees with disabilities, and submit it to the council's offices at New Mitihani House in South C, Nairobi, by December 30, 2026.

Trainees registering for the supplementary assessments will pay a flat fee of Sh7,200 in a single instalment, while those retaking practicum assessments will pay an additional Sh5,000.
All payments must be made through the e-Citizen platform after college principals generate the necessary system invoices.
Copies of the circular have been sent to the State Department of Education and to regional and county education directors to coordinate compliance nationwide.
