Kiambu National Polytechnic is strengthening its focus on student and staff welfare through investments in physical fitness, mental health support, cultural activities and research, as technical training institutions face growing expectations to produce graduates equipped with both professional skills and personal resilience.

The institution has brought together its Customer Service Week and Cultural Week celebrations, using the occasion to encourage healthy lifestyles, promote unity among people from different backgrounds and recognise the role of employees in delivering quality training.

Principal Sammy Waititu said the celebrations were designed to remind the polytechnic community that the institution's success depended on the collective contribution of students, trainers and other members of staff.

The activities, initially planned for the previous week, were rescheduled after the institution hosted the third season of the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) ball games for the Nairobi region.

Mr Waititu said the management considered it important to proceed with the celebrations despite the change of dates, noting that students and staff remained central to the institution's operations.

He explained that Customer Service Week was intended to appreciate the people who support the institution's mandate, while the cultural programme would provide an opportunity for learners and employees to celebrate their diverse backgrounds.
Kiambu National Polytechnic Principal Sammy Waititu (centre), accompanied by members of staff, says the institution is strengthening student and staff welfare through investments in physical fitness, mental health support, cultural activities and research to promote holistic development.

The principal said the two events had been combined to make efficient use of resources while allowing members of the polytechnic community to participate in a wider range of activities.

He added that the celebrations were also intended to reinforce shared values, including respect, kindness, humility and unity, which he said were essential in building a cohesive learning environment.

Polytechnic establishes gym to promote physical and mental wellness

A major component of the institution's welfare programme is a gym established to give students and staff access to organised physical exercise.

Mr Waititu said the facility was part of the management's commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles and ensuring that members of the institution were physically and mentally prepared to perform their duties.

He noted that the polytechnic had established guidance and counselling structures to assist students experiencing personal and academic challenges, while trainers also provide support to learners who need assistance.

The principal said the institution was concerned about the growing challenges associated with mental health and wanted to encourage a culture in which wellness was treated as an important part of education and workplace performance.

He urged students and employees to make use of the gym according to the established timetable, saying regular exercise could complement other efforts to improve general health.

Head of Sports and Recreation Githara Chuchu said the idea of establishing the facility was developed in 2023, with the primary objective of improving the physical fitness and mental wellness of students and staff.

Mr Chuchu explained that the demands of technical training made physical fitness particularly important for lecturers and trainers, many of whom spend extended periods standing while conducting lessons and supervising practical work.

For students, he said, the facility was intended to encourage regular exercise while providing opportunities to develop the stamina required for competitive sports.

He added that the institution wanted to produce graduates whose development extended beyond classroom performance to include physical well-being, discipline and the ability to work effectively with others.

The gym attendant, Simiyu Wanyonyi, said the facility also provided students with a constructive way to spend time between lessons.

He noted that learners with free periods could use the gym rather than remain idle, adding that organised recreation offered an opportunity to promote discipline and discourage involvement in unproductive activities.

Mr Wanyonyi said the facility had proved useful in preparing the institution's sports teams for competitions by helping players improve their endurance and conditioning.

He commended the institution's management and the sports department for supporting the initiative.

Students welcome fitness facility and cultural celebrations

Students have welcomed the gym, describing it as an additional resource for maintaining physical fitness and managing the pressures associated with college life.

Eric Njuguna, the student minister for information and social affairs, said the facility allowed learners to exercise together and improve their physical health.

He explained that students could use their free time to participate in workouts, relax after demanding lessons and interact with their peers in a structured environment.

Mr Njuguna thanked the management for providing the facility, saying it demonstrated recognition of students' welfare beyond their academic responsibilities.

Institutional president Kibaki Ibrahim also praised the initiative, saying the gym had created opportunities for students to engage in recreational activities while strengthening relationships within the college.

He said the ongoing cultural celebrations were expected to bring together learners from different communities through shared activities and opportunities to showcase their traditions.

The student leadership said the programme had been organised to encourage broad participation, with prizes and recognition planned for participants in various activities.

The celebrations are expected to provide a platform for students to express their cultural identities while building mutual respect and a stronger sense of belonging.

Kiambu National Polytechnic qualifies for national KATTI games

The institution's wellness initiatives coincide with its participation in regional sporting competitions, where its teams have been seeking qualification for the national-level KATTI games.

Kiambu National Polytechnic hosted the Nairobi region's third season ball games from October 7 to 11, bringing together approximately 25 technical and vocational training institutions.

The competition featured men's and women's teams in basketball, football, volleyball and other disciplines, with participating institutions competing for places at the national event scheduled for Shamberere National Polytechnic.

Mr Chuchu said Kiambu National Polytechnic emerged champions in men's basketball and finished third in women's netball.

The institution's women's football team secured fourth place, while the men's football side was eliminated during the preliminary rounds.

The results earned the polytechnic representation at the national competition in men's basketball and netball.

Mr Chuchu said the teams had put up a determined performance against their regional rivals and expressed confidence that continued investment in training and physical conditioning would help improve their competitiveness.

He noted that the gym would complement regular sports training by giving athletes access to equipment and space for exercises aimed at strengthening endurance and physical performance.

The institution's sports programme is expected to continue supporting participation in competitive games while encouraging more students to embrace physical activity.

Polytechnic prepares to host international research week

Meanwhile, the polytechnic is preparing to host an international research week intended to promote knowledge sharing and showcase innovations developed by students, trainers and researchers.

Mr Waititu said the programme would bring together participants from Kenya and abroad, creating opportunities for collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

He urged researchers, trainers and students from different institutions to participate, noting that technical education had an important role to play in developing solutions to industrial and social challenges.

According to the principal, research and innovation are essential to Kenya's ambition of becoming an industrialised economy capable of generating wealth, improving healthcare and raising living standards.

He said the institution wanted to expose its students to international developments and prepare them for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in an increasingly competitive global market.

The research programme is expected to complement classroom instruction by encouraging practical experimentation, problem-solving and the development of ideas that can be applied in industry.

Mr Waititu said innovations emerging from technical and vocational institutions could contribute to economic growth if supported by the necessary skills, collaboration and opportunities for practical application.

The combined celebrations reflect the institution's broader approach to technical education, which places emphasis on students' social development and physical welfare alongside academic and professional training.

By bringing together wellness activities, cultural engagement, sports and research, the polytechnic is seeking to create an environment that supports learning while preparing students for responsibilities beyond college.

The institution's leadership maintains that staff welfare is equally important, arguing that employees who are supported and healthy are better positioned to deliver quality training and guide learners towards their career goals.

As preparations continue for the national sporting competition and the research week, Kiambu National Polytechnic is seeking to strengthen its profile as a technical training institution that combines practical skills development with innovation, recreation and student welfare.
