The poor state of roads in Narok South and Narok West has raised concerns over the smooth administration of the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Narok Branch says deteriorating road conditions have disrupted the transportation of examination materials. Some vehicles have reportedly been unable to reach examination centres, forcing officers to use foot.
Branch Chairman Kipkoech Chepkwony said the situation is affecting candidates as schools and examination officials struggle with transport challenges.
"Some vehicles transporting examination materials have been unable to reach examination centres because of the poor state of roads, and this is affecting candidates," he said.(Education News Kenya — https://educationnews.co.ke/news/heavy-rains-poor-roads-threaten-kcse-administration-in-narok-south-and-narok-west)
He said the problem has been worsened by heavy rainfall across the region, which has made some roads difficult to navigate.
Mr Chepkwony called for urgent government intervention, warning that the poor road infrastructure is not only affecting national examinations but has also contributed to teachers moving out of the affected areas.
"The issue of poor roads needs to be addressed urgently because it is affecting service delivery and has also contributed to many teachers moving away from these areas," he said.
Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia said the government has put in place contingency measures to ensure the examinations proceed smoothly. He said four-wheel-drive vehicles will be deployed to deliver examination materials in areas where heavy rainfall makes access difficult.
"We have put in place mechanisms to ensure that all candidates sit their examinations without unnecessary interruptions. Where roads become impassable, four-wheel-drive vehicles will be used, and we will work closely with other stakeholders to ensure examination materials reach their destinations," Mr Lotiatia said.
