Koyonzo defies Vihiga scare to retain rugby sevens title in national school games

KSSSA SCHOOL GAMES

It was Kakamega against vihiga Counties in this year’s Kenya Secondary Sports Association (KSSA) games rugby finals between champions Koyonzo Boys and Vihiga Boys High School, as a last-minute try by on-form fly-half Jackson Siketa sealed the win for the “Stormers” for a 22-12 full-time score at the well-attended match played at the Western Bulls – “Bull Ring” – grounds.

The national finals were a repeat of the Western region finals between the two sides that ended in a 17-7 score in favour of Koyonzo at the same venue.

Vihiga had a well-coordinated attack at the national stage marshalled by the diminutive centre Owen

“Kante” Kedera will be looking forward to replicating the same form at the East and Central Africa competitions in Rwanda. The two teams will be joined in Rwanda by St. Mary’s Yala who defeated Kitondo School from Eastern in the playoffs.

Kakamega County representatives in the girls’ category, Mwira, lifted the trophy after a hard-laboured 10-5 win over industrious Gilgil Girls. Both teams proceed to the East Africa competitions alongside Madira Girls who narrowly defeated Bishop Sulumeti, another Kakamega side, 5-0 in the 3/4th playoffs.

In football, Butere Girls marched to the finals after beating Madira Girls 1-0 and will meet Trans Nzoia County’s Wiyeta Girls in the finals, tomorrow.

In boys football, the Eagles’ flight was slowed down as crowd favorites Shanderema Secondary School suffered a 1-0 loss in the hands of St. Anthony Boys in the semifinals marking their exit in the title contention campaign. They however have another of redeeming themselves when they meet Agoro Sare in the playoffs tomorrow; the winner will be assured of the remaining slot to Rwanda.

Mwitoti Girls will battle it out with Soweto in the girls’ volleyball playoffs.
